  47. A Note on Transliteration:
  48. Some of the languages contained on these CDs, like
  49. Chinese and Japanese, Arabic and Hebrew (among others)
  50. normally use character sets very different from
  51. English. For some learners, having to master a new
  52. character set while also trying to understand the
  53. basics of a new language can be difficult. In order to
  54. simplify the new learner's task, we have chosen to
  55. present these languages in a transliterated format
  56. that is written using the Latin alphabet, as in
  57. English. Transliterated texts represent the sounds of
  58. the foreign language in a way that is more easily
  59. recognizable to the English-speaking learner.  
  60.  
  61. Be sure to use the interactive sound features of
  62. Languages of the World to hear exactly how native
  63. speakers pronounce your chosen language.  You can also
  64. refer to the Grammar Basics on-line grammar help file
  65. for more information on transliteration and your
  66. language.

  69. Troubleshooting Tips for Languages of the World
  70.  
  71. Below are solutions to some common situations. See the
  72. on-line Help for additional troubleshooting information.
  73.  
  74. 1.  CANNOT HEAR SOUND OR SEE ILLUSTRATIONS
  75.  
  76. If you cannot hear sound or see illustrations with
  77. Languages of the World, verify that you have the correct
  78. CD-ROM in the drive. You must have the Languages of the
  79. World CD-ROM marked with the name of the language you
  80. are using in the drive to hear sound and see
  81. illustrations.
  82.  
  83. If you have the correct CD in the drive but still have
  84. this problem, see the on-line Help for other possible
  85. solutions.
  86.  
  87. 2.  CANNOT SEE EVERYTHING ON THE SCREEN /
  88.     RESOLUTION TOO LOW
  89.  
  90. If you cannot see everything on the screen when you use
  91. Languages of the World, your monitor might be set to a
  92. resolution which is too low.  Languages of the World
  93. requires at least 800x600 resolution.  If you try to run
  94. it with a lower resolution, such as 640x480, the program
  95. will not be displayed properly.
  96.  
  97. To change your resolution on Windows:
  98.  
  99. A. Choose Start / Settings / Control Panel.
  100. B. Double-click on the Display control panel icon.
  101. C. Click on the Settings tab.
  102. D. Move the Screen Area slider to right, until the
  103.    display resolution under the slider says 800 by
  104.    600 pixels or higher.
  105. E. Verify that the Colors setting is still set to 
  106.    High Color or True Color. For some monitors, the 
  107.    color setting will change when you change 
  108.    resolutions. 
  109. F. Click OK to close the control panel.
  110. G. Click OK if you are asked to confirm the new 
  111.    settings.
  112. H. After the new settings are in place, restart 
  113.    Languages of the World.
  114.  
  115. To change your resolution on Macintosh:
  116. A. Select <Apple>/Control Panels/Monitors & Sound.
  117. B. Click Monitor.
  118. C. In the Resolution box, select 823 x 624, 75Hz or a 
  119.    Higher resolution.
  120. D. Close the control panel.
  121. E. Restart Languages of the World.
  122.  
  123. 3. ERROR IN THE SOUND SYSTEM
  124.  
  125. On Windows, the error message "There was an Error in
  126. the Sound System..." during recording is caused by a
  127. conflict in the memory area of the computer. When you
  128. record your own voice Windows 95 or 98 saves the
  129. recording as a sound file in a temporary area of memory.
  130. When this memory area becomes full Windows 95 or 98
  131. shutsdown the recording utility to protect other
  132. programs that might be using that area of memory.
  133.  
  134. To free up more memory, disable any other programs that
  135. are running at the same time as Languages of the World 
  136. and / or delete all temporary data files on the computer.
  137.  
  138. To delete Temporary Files
  139.  
  140. A. Click Start / Find / Files or Folders.
  141. B. In the named box type:   *.TMP
  142. C. In the Look In: box make sure it has your Hard 
  143.    Drive (C:) listed.
  144. D. Click Find Now.
  145. E. When the search is finished, go to the Edit Menu 
  146.    And choose Select All.
  147. F. Go to the File menu and select Delete. This action 
  148.    will delete all of the temporary files on your 
  149.    Hard Drive.
  150.  
  151. To close programs running in the background:
  152.  
  153. A. Press CTRL +  ALT + DELETE once.
  154. B. A Close Program window will appear. There are two 
  155.    programs essential to Windows: Explorer and 
  156.    Systray. You can close all of the other programs 
  157.    listed there by highlighting them and clicking the 
  158.    End Task button.
  159. C. You will have to re-open the Close Program window 
  160.    each time by pressing the  CTRL +  ALT + DELETE 
  161.    keys.
  162.  
  163. After following this procedure, your computer should have
  164. enough memory to run Languages of the World! without
  165. error.
